Neuropsychological Assessments

Understanding is the first step toward effective support. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment offers a clear roadmap of your child’s strengths and challenges, empowering you to become their most informed advocate.

What makes a neuropsychological assessment unique is that it integrates a combination of objective and clinical information from multiple sources to better understand and support your child. Neuropsychological assessments tease apart constitutional and environmental influences, as well as cognitive from emotional, behavioral, and social issues to give a clear understanding that in turn guides effective interventions.

Common reasons why a parent might seek an assessment for their child include questions and concerns about the following:

  • Learning Differences (dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia)

  • Attention/ADHD/ADD

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders

  • Giftedness & Twice-Exceptional (2e)

  • Executive Functioning Challenges

  • Processing Disorders

  • Language and communication disorders

  • Behavioral Concerns & Social Challenges

  • Early Traumatic Stress

  • Emotional Difficulties (Anxiety and/or Depression)

  • Developmental delays & Intellectual disability

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries & Neurological conditions

  • Chromosomal & genetic disorders

  • Adoptions & Prenatal Exposure to Toxins

  • Questions about school fit & educational choices

Assessment Journey

In full, a assessment takes approximately 4-6 weeks and involves the following:

  • Schedule a call with me to learn more about the process and see if we are a good fit.

  • When you’re ready to move forward we will schedule the assessment and you will submit your deposit, complete necessary paperwork, and provide prior records.

  • The one-and-a-half hour parent interview is your time to share your child’s story, express your concerns, and relay important developmental history. Together, we will define the goals for the evaluation, which I will use to create a tailored roadmap for your child’s assessment.

  • With your consent, I will collaborate with the other people involved in your child’s care to gain insight and ensure we are working together as a team.

  • If your child is in preschool or elementary school I will spend an hour observing them at their school interacting with familiar adults and their peers.

  • For testing I will meet with your child for several hours over the course of 2-3 sessions to get to know them better and administer a standardized battery of tests tailored to their needs and your questions.

  • After testing is complete we will have another hour-and-a-half parent meeting for verbal feedback about the results and recommendations from the assessment . A separate, age appropriate feedback meeting is also offered to your child to encourage self-awareness, acceptance, and growth. I am also available for a one-hour meeting with your child’s school.

  • The assessment concludes with a written assessment report that summarizes information about your child’s background, the test results, conclusions, diagnosis, their treatment plan, and test scores.

  • Additional consultation is available after the assessment is complete on an as needed basis.

IQ Testing

IQ testing provides more information about a child’s cognitive abilities.

It is often utilized to determine if a child is intellectually gifted. Some schools and special programs require IQ testing as part of the admission process. IQ testing can also aide in making decisions about school placement. I utilize the Wechsler Intelligence Scales in my practice (the WIPPSI-IV, WISC-V, or WAIS-5).

IQ testing involves a single meeting with your child for testing. Most children finish the testing in 90 minutes or less but we schedule 2 hours to ensure ample time. Results are provided to you later that same day in the form of a brief written report. If desired, this report can also be forwarded to schools for admissions purposes. Parents wishing to discuss their child’s results in more depth have the opportunity to schedule a consultation meeting for further discussion.

Parent Consultations

Having an expert to help you navigate your questions and concerns is an invaluable resource. You may feel that your child is struggling but are unsure of the next steps, or perhaps they have already been assessed and you are looking for a deeper interpretation of the findings.

Consultation offers a flexible way to gain clarity, whether you want to discuss IQ test results or need extra support turning recommendations into an actionable plan. Together, we will determine the scope of our work and schedule sessions on an as-needed basis to ensure you feel supported, informed, and confident in your next steps.
